Words have different ways of working in a sentence. The roles that words can take on are called the parts of speech, and in English there are eight: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.

1. Nouns name a person, place, thing or idea. They are often preceded by an article (aanthe).

2. Pronouns are used in place of a noun, usually either as a substitute for the noun or as an adjective. Some common pronouns are hesheitIhim, and her.

3. Verbs describe an action or a state of being. Examples include jumpis, and laughs.

4. Adjectives modify nouns or pronouns. Some examples are hotlow, and delicious.

5. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Examples include quicklypoorly, and well.

6. Prepositions come before nouns or pronouns, and help to form phrases that act like an adjective or adverb. Some common prepositions are aboutwithatto, and from.

7. Conjunctions connect words, phrases, and clauses. The most common conjunctions are andbutor, and so.

8. Interjections, finally, express surprise or strong emotion. Common examples include heyyo, and wow.
