ASVAB General Science: Temperature Conversions
Converting Fahrenheit to Celsius:
- Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature
- Multiply the result by 5
- Divide that number by 9
Converting Celsius to Fahrenheit:
- Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9
- Divide the result by 5
- Add 32 to that number
Let's look at some examples:
Converting 68°F to Celsius:
C = (68 - 32) × 5/9
C = 36 × 5/9
C = 20°C
Converting 25°C to Fahrenheit:
F = (25 × 9/5) + 32
F = 45 + 32
F = 77°F
Converting 0°C (freezing point of water) to Fahrenheit:
F = (0 × 9/5) + 32
F = 32°F
Converting 100°F to Celsius:
C = (100 - 32) × 5/9
C = 68 × 5/9
C ≈ 37.8°C
These conversions are useful for understanding temperature scales used in different parts of the world. The United States primarily uses Fahrenheit, while most other countries use Celsius.
