What’s on the Elementary Level SSAT?

The Elementary Level SSAT includes Math, Verbal, Reading, and Writing sections. The categories covered on the Math section of the Elementary Level SSAT are number properties, operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and probability

Important concepts for the Elementary Level Math section are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, place value, arranging numbers in order, fractions, geometry basics, measurement basics, and graphs.

The Elementary Level SSAT Verbal section includes vocabulary and analogy questions. The vocabulary questions focus on synonyms, and may include words related to science, social studies, or technology.

The types of analogy include opposites, synonyms, characteristics, part-to-whole, uses, users, categories, product-to-producer (artist is to painting as…), degree (trickle is to flood as…), and homonyms.

In the Elementary Level SSAT Reading section, the student will read seven short texts, each of which will be accompanied by four multiple-choice questions. The texts may be poetry, fiction, or non-fiction. Students are asked to find information in the text, identify main and supporting ideas, and define words in context. 

In the Elementary Level SSAT Writing section, the student will have to write a story based on a picture prompt. The story needs to have a beginning, middle, and end. 

The Experimental section includes a mix of Verbal, Reading, and Math questions.
